Roberts Diary From Australia Hello everybody, My travels so far; after spending almost 2 months in Cronulla in Sydney doing very little but drinking, going to the beach, lazing around and working the odd shift doing labouring or similar, i decided to make my move north up the east coast. To begin with keith, steve (irish chef that we met in Cronulla) and 2 canadians; Mckinley and Kavita- freinds of Steve's, hired a 3 berth campervan for a large amount of money and headed to Byron Bay for the Blues and Roots Music festival. On route we spent a night at a campsite in Coffs Harbour as the journey was longer than expected to Byron. On arrival, the following day, Byron Bay was heaving. All campsites, hostels and other forms of budget accomodation were fully booked. This being down to the festival and the fact that it was the Easter weekend. For that night we headed about 20 km south to a place called Lennox Head where we were lucky to get one of the last remaining spaces at the campsite there. That night we got a taxi to Byron for the festival where the notorious vanishing key incident happened (Keith!!...only joking) I'll say no more than that for now as Keith might try to kill me when i see him next. Due to our late arrival a saw 2 bands; the 1st being a Canadian band called Pilate, who were very good, and "The Dave Matthews Band" who, despite not knowing very well, were excellent.
The following day we headed to Surfers Paradise as campsites around Byron were still all full. However, we encountered the same problem there (this being Good Friday). So.........after many attempts to get a campsite, we had to settle for staying in an appartment. This was great, but made our camper a waste of money( a lesson learned then...........book ahead!!)
I was then sent plumitting back to the real world of hostels by staying at the Prince's Consort backpackers, again in brisbane. During the 3 nights that i spent there I did some shopping, went to Australia Zoo ( Steve Irwin's place. Didn't see him though!!!!) and met Dave and Adam from Northern Ireland who I'm currently travelling New Zealand with.

Every single day, 30,000 children are dying as a result of extreme poverty. This year, 2005, we finally have the resources, knowledge and opportunity to end this shameful situation. In July of this year, 8 world leaders will have it in their power to create the changes, which will make poverty history. But they will only use that power if enough people tell them to. Check out this website to see what you can do. www.makepovertyhistory.org |
